Ok, my iPhone 3g unlocked and jailbroken was stolen a couple months ago. Waiting for my contract renewal so I can take advantage of the lesser priced 32gb iPhone, by this weekend, I will be making my iPhone 3GS purchase and will get back into the scene, in other words, I'll be jailbreaking and hopefully unlocking.

The question I have...

Considering 3.1 release and the Dev-Team's warning not upgrading 3.1 baseband (or whatever version it is). Will my new purchased iPhone have the latest firmware (including latest baseband)?

I'm assuming that if I get the latest and greatest firmware for my 3GS, I'm going to be able to jailbreak but I may lose the ability to UltraSn0w it due to current no backward baseband hack.

Can someone confirm this? Are my assumptions correct? Are there any current solutions that I'm missing?

Please help.

Thanks in advanced!

There is not yet a jailbreak for the 3GS, though one is not supposed to be far off (either a new version of redsn0w or greenpois0n). You will probably be able to jailbreak within a few weeks.

As for unlocking, there is currently no prospect for unlocking the new baseband. Ultrasn0w will not work with it. A new unlocking method is months off, if it ever comes. Since you will have a contract, though, you should be fine at least for the duration of that contract.

I guess I have to cross my fingers to hopefully get an iPhone 3GS that has firmware 3.0.1 with the older baseband!

Arrrggghhh!
