I be the first to admit I getting old. I walk most weekend mornings with my dog and my D750 and one or 2 lens in a tarmac camera bag. I usually carry a 24 to 120 and something else depending on the day. We usually walk for 2 to 3 hours. I carry the bag on my right and over my left shoulder. Lately my left shoulder is very sore and it last for days. I tried switching sides and it just doesn't work for many reasons. So I see the two options are and different typo pf camera bag or and lightweight camera. I am very happy with the D750 and I shoot a lot of low light shots so a replacement may be hard to find and also $$$. So I may need a ned camera bag. I tried a Lowpro sling type and it was comfortable but a pain to access the camera, so I am looking for suggestions please.
Thanks

From last May, but it's not as if camera strap companies are as innovative as the camera manufacturers.

It sounds like you need something rather small. I use a Timbuk2 Messenger bag with a Snoop insert when I only need one body and two or three lenses.

I'm a convert to Peak Design's camera straps and also to this clip. If you're carrying a camera on a belt, I think that the "Pro Pad" (09:24) is worth getting. It adds to comfort. That said, I think that this solution, if used with a belt, is perhaps girth dependent in the absence of suspenders :)

How about no bag ?

I've been a fan of Peak Design's camera straps as well. I also have issues with my neck and shoulder so I don't even carry a bag. Just one small camera and whatever lens I have.

I do have a big camera bag, but it's only for transporting the gear to where I'm going to be.

That is why I switched to Sony. Due to physics, full frame lens may weigh and have similar bulk, but the body is significantly lighter.

Under no circumstances get a Domke bag as the almost pure canvas lacks protection. As a primary bag I looked at Peak Design but settled on a Tenba Messenger that I likes a little better. Almost as storage, it carries body with lens mounted (except 70-200)and 5 other lenses (including the 20-200). Can remove one lens an put flash in there. For walkaround, looking for a smaller case that would carry a couple lens only, keeping camera on strap.

I carry a fair bit of weight and use a backpack so the load is evenly distributed on my shoulders and back. My current bag is an older Gura Gear that has held up well to a lot of abuse but Lowepro makes a wide variety of excellent quality bags.

The thing with backpacks is that you generally have to take them off and put it on the ground to get organized and ready to shoot. This is something many people dislike, even hate, about backpacks. For me, I like it because it forces me to slow down and be a little bit more thoughtful about what I'm doing.

And as daughter notes...the people hiking with don't wait as you take it off to take a photo. Both she and I have a Lowepro Sport which is unique. Upper half is a daypack with lower half side access compartment for camera with lens and one additional compartment full depth for another lens. The area for the camelback hydration blatter will also hold (less blatter) a 15" MBP. When I travel overseas, that and the camera bag are my two carry-ons. While all photo equiptment in in the regular camera bag, I stuff all the electrical chargers, connectors, foreign plugs, etc in the photo compartments of the backpack, upper "daypack" compartment has MBP, other essentials, and bulky but foldable sound cancelling headphones for on the plane. Small items like passport, tickets, envelopes segregating foreign currency, et in upper zipper compartment.

It isn't hard to pinpoint the problem here. The problem is 2-3 hour walks with a D750 + 24mm-120mm lens that together weigh 1.6kg/3.4lb + a second lens of unspecified weight + the weight of the shoulder bag. We're probably closing in on at least 2.5kg/5.5lb. And the lens, if I have the right one, is f/4, which unless you also bring along a tripod is not ideal for "a lot of low light shots".

Personally, I do this kind of thing with a camera + a single 35mm or 50mm lens that together weigh about 880g/1.9lbs, and I know that it can be done lighter than that. Put the camera on a neck strap or belt clip and I'm off.

The Nikon D750 body with battery, by itself, weighs as much as my entire set-up and is significantly bulkier.

Maybe time to rethink being a pack horse :)

I would attack the problem from all three sides:

(1) Get a sling for your body (have a look at some of the “three-point harnesses” that resemble modern-day seat belts).

(2) Get a backpack. Also, you need to pack the backpack well: the heaviest equipment should sit waist-level and lighter stuff on top.

(3) Optimize your gear choice: how many other lenses do you take with you? How often to you need them? The 24-120 mm covers a lot of situations already. You could replace the 24-120 mm with one or two primes as well as something longer in addition.
