I've dragged myself into this century and bought a refurb 15" powerbook which is as good as new. Just trying to connect to the internet but my very old Alcatel USB DSL modem (which I use on my 6 year old iMac) doesn't seem to have a place to connect to my lovely powerbook. So what do I need to replace this and apart from Airport Express what else do I need to enter wireless internet heaven. Cheers.

You should be able to download a driver and then connect through the USB modem. In fact if you still have the modem software disc, it is probably included.

The Alcatel speedtouch modems have drivers for Panther; I gave up on mine about 10.3.3 though since it caused more kernel panics than anything else.

Buy yourself an ADSL ethernet modem router; there are several around the shops. A basic one that you can plug into an Express is £20 to £30.

If you're not bothered about Airtunes or wireless printing through it, you can just buy a Dlink or Netgear integrated wireless modem/router which your Mac should connect to without problems.

An airport express! ;)

Very few 3rd party Wireless modem/routers have the appletalk software ability for wireless printing.

Wordmunger beat me to it!

That one will work but £50 is pricey for a plain ADSL modem.

Try a few smaller computer shops; you should be able to pick one up for about £30. The one that BT sell for Playstation 2's to go online works - it's one of the Voyagers that you can pick up on eBay for about £20
