Sorry if this is the wrong board, but since it is to get Windows related things on a Mac, I figured it's the closest place to what I want.

Does anyone have experience running WINE on an x86 Mac? How well does it work for Windows games that are known to work on other WINEs (such as FreeBSD or Linux)?

And, some related questions, if no one minds, although it's off topic for this board, what graphics chipset is on the current Mac Minis, and how well is it on OpenGL? Also, how good is the cooling if you have one of these running full throttle for many hours at a time?

I really haven't bothered with wine on Mac, but:

It's the Intel integrated stuff, GMA950. It's fine for everyday tasks and people are generally happy with video playback, but it's not going to be anyone's first choice for realistic gaming.

The mini is really very nice in that department.

Yeah, I know the quality of the chipset, fortunately the games aren't that intensive that I'm looking at. But the drivers handles OpenGL as well as in Linux/BSD on a similar chipset (though I'm assuming with less hassle)?

There is this, but as you can see in the todo, more work still needs to be done.

I haven't had much luck using any apps that require an installer into Darwine, particularly any games, but I do find it useful for simple self-contained Windows apps.

I'm waiting for Crossover Office to try more complicated apps, and will continue using Boot Camp and Parallels in the mean time.

Thank you... Guess I may end up having to put off the mac box till I build my FreeBSD rig.

edit: CX has a Mac port (and yet they think BSD would be too expensive, huh??)

Consider Parallels. Even though it's not supposed to support DirectX, I've had pretty good success at running some of my kids' edutainment games with it. Nothing too demanding, but still DirectX8 games in a windows on OS X.

CX or just regular wine did the DX games? And what was the vid card?

I played Master of Orion 3 on my old FreeBSD machine before it went back to it's owner.

I don't want to buy another copy of the game (not to mention, I hear they majorly gimped the Mac version of MOO3)
