In a way, you're right, flyingcats. It was a money issue that resulted in the changes that resulted in Leapfrog...more specifically, the large money pit that Spymac had been.
Please don't look at the hosting fees advertised by GoDaddy and such and say "how expensive could it have been to run a site?" As we became popular, it became necessary to set up our own server farm, full-time staff. We had exceeded the traffic that a hosting company could handle, and the demands (yes, I use that word deliberately) of the Spymac community for speed and access required significant investment. That greatly increased our costs, but we had confidence that we'd be able to make it back in advertising and other revenue.
Well, that didn't prove to be happen. And most of our attempts to increase our income to cover the costs were greeted with open hostility. And as we had problems (some granted caused by our own mistakes, but not all), the response was "well spend more money to fix it"...from the same people who could be counted to complain if one more ad appeared or anything was done to earn money.

There are a lot of legitimate things that can be said about the way we've messed up. Lots of things we wish we'd done differently. But when you see someone talking about the owners having gone money mad, please consider the possibility that their mouth isn't the orifice they're talking out of.
