We're having one helluva time getting my girlfriend's iPhone 3gs to work. We brought it in yesterday to get an issue looked at (people had difficult time hearing her... the mic would cut in and out). The Genius restored it, then told us to set the phone up as a new iPhone on her computer. Now, when we plug the phone into the computer, it starts to upload the software to the phone, and an error pops up, saying the phone cannot be restored, and is in a safe mode.

It's a 3GS, 16gb, and her laptop is a 13" MBP running Leopard.

I would take the iPhone back to the Apple Store, this time with her MacBook Pro, so as to demonstrate what happens at the Genius Bar.

I would, but we have a couple of problems:

The nearest one is 30 minutes away, and our work day is long (out the door at 7, home around 8 or 9). Plus, getting another appointment will be a hassle and a half.

I made a new account on the MBP, and tried restoring there, but had no luck, until I tried a different USB port. Now I'm able to make calls and such, but I can't sync my contact information (as it's on the other account).

I have NO idea what has happened. It's completely bizarre...

remove the software from your MB, DFU Restore. Make sure your iphone is connected and do not touch the plugs or phone while it is restoring.

Sounds like you're gonna have to take time out of your busy day to take it in to the Genius again and have them look at it. Feel free to keep screwing around with it, but it sounds like you need a replacement. I know that sucks, but life isn't a peach.

Or get yourself a nice windows based PC.... no problems here ;)

No really, bite the bullet and make the trip.

Before you blame the iPhone, just ask your girlfriend to check how she's holding the phone whilst making a call. It's very easy for the little finger to stray round the bottom of the phone and cover the mic. This would explain her voice cutting in and out during a call.

Just a thought!
