Sound care optical 5.1 type question

Does the imac G5 support 5.1 sound via its optical out without any add ons?

Yes it does. The only thing you'll need is a mini TOSLink that can be bought on Amazon for 2 bucks. The only store that I've seen stock them is my local Apple Stores.

Is there a setting you put on your sound prefs for that or does it detect automatically? I've connected my powerbook to my stereo for years using a headphone to RCA adapter but if I can do digital, well....that'd be awesome.
