Sound echoing problem

So my dad has been complaining about his friends and family receiving echoes on their side whenever they talk to him.

whats the problem with this and how can i fix this? he took it to the apple store to the genius bar and they gave him a really hard time about the problem with the iphone. i dont know the whole story but it seems like they are going to exchange it for another phone. but they are sending him back and forth from one store to another back and forth. whats going on? im confused.

Usually the echo happens when the receiver of the call has their volume up too high.

the sound is like all the way down to the lower areas. so does that mean the mic is too sensitive?

Same deal; even with the volume way down. Everyone who calls hears an echo.
