Mac mini mid 2010, lion os x.
Samsung TV, optical out to external speakers.
Mac connected via hdmi cable - output sound 'samsung tv'

For some reason the sound cuts out intermittently, music, films etc.

If i connect a normal phono lead out the mac mini headphones jack direct to the speakers the sound is fine.

Why does hdmi cut out?

Even if i diss the external Tv speakers & just use the internal TV speakers it cuts out...

If i use bluetooth headset with mac the sound is fine. Deffo some issue outputting sound via hdmi i think? Any ideas?

Right, so im messing around with the Audio MIDI setup now..

HDMI is selected on the left side, source : samsung
By dropping the format frequency to 32000.0Hz, down from the default 44100.0Hz my sound seems fixed...no longer cutting out.
So, next question...do HDMI cables have different frequency tolerances? ...should i buy a more expensive HDMI cable to use the higher frequency settings? ...do they actually make a difference?

I have the Q Acoustics QTVX 2.1 speaker system, which is a neat little system made for flat TVs. My LED samsung 46" has really bad speakers and my old 5.1 system wasnt that great(samsung again). These speakers, only 2.1 but really pack a punch :)

So, does that frequency setting matter on a 2.1 system?

HDMI Mac mini out sound issues

I have the same problem too.

Sound cuts out for approx 1 sec every so often. The video still plays, but the audio is missing.

Happens randomly.

Mac mini 2010, samsung approx 2 yrs old.
Latest Lion version.

Not sure what is going on.

I have read that if you change the the resolution in the settings pannel and then set it back it works.

Going to try that asap. (away from tv now)

Cheers

Same problem here.

Really really annoying sound breaks up over HDMI or optical.

Apple support were no use.

Me too

Same thing. Mac Mini, mid-2010. Lion 10.7.2. Using HDMI to a Yamaha A/V receiver and LG TV.

I've been using this setup for months until all of a sudden this last week it started cutting out every 10-15 seconds. I did notice one day that my audio output settings switched to "built-in speaker" and I had a hard time changing it back as the setting would not stay on HDMI as the output, but honestly I can't remember whether this was before or after the sound issues started. Early on I thought it was the source having audio issues, but then I later noticed that it does it with web video, DVD Player, iTunes, everything. Switching to built-in speaker fixes the issue, so it's definitely something to do with the HDMI connection.
