I just updated to ML on my iMac and the sound stopped working. I restarted my iMac but it continues not to work :(

any suggestions?
Clean installing it? If so, how?

Go into the Sound preferences and see whether Internal Speakers are listed under Output. If they're there, make sure the computer is not muted. If they aren't or something else is in their place, make sure you don't have something connected in your headphone jack. If there is nothing connected, consider resetting PRAM. These are steps from this Apple support article.

You are right!! thanks so much! :)
I don't get why the internal speakers wasn't the default preference?? I don't even have external speakers.

Was it showing your 2nd generation or 1080p AppleTV as the output? What was selected if not the speakers?

errrrm, it was connected to Soundflower

I remember when I had the MBP (sold to get iMac) i connected to external speakers once.. but I never used it since. It seems all the preferences are there since it was moved to this iMac.

Now I'm having the issue of random whossh sounds like when you move things out of your dock--it makes a whoosh noise. so, out of nowhere every 3 minutes it makes a whoosh noise. I don't know how to stop it? I remember it started happening after I deleted some duplicate notes form the note app.
I restarted the imac but it's still making that noise- also I quite the note app and restarted. the noise is really annoying! Halp!

**never mind; I think it was iChat lol. (did a little googling) it plays a sound when a buddy logs in/out.. I always used Adium. it's so weird b/c I don't have a buddy list.. this will take some time to get use to. I tried to open the buddy list for ichat but it won't open? errrr.... this isn't very intuitive :|

Anyways, I'm leaving this for others.. I know other people will have the same issues.
