so my iMac on a, not daily, but regularly, goes silent. the volume is up and I can see internal speakers selected in blue in the sound, but its silent, no finder noise, playing videos or netflix gets nothing.
one easy way to replicate it, which is another issue, my electricity trip switch keeps going, and you can guarantee that if the electricity goes, and then I turn it back on and the Mac restarts, it will always be silent. restart it again and it will be fine. but sometimes it just happens, there was sound before and now there's not.
if I have my AirPods nearby, switching in sound, from internal to AirPods and back again will fix it too.
