My husband has an old iPod Classic, 5th or 6th Gen. The iPod shows that it's playing but no sound comes out when we plug in the ear buds. I've tried 3 different ones and took it to the Apple store and they tried it but couldn't get any sound out. They said it was too old and they don't have parts for it anymore. The earplug slot looks okay. For some odd reason I decided to try plugging it into my car's USB when I left the store and for some odd reason I get the sound thru the car speakers. As soon as I got home I tried the earbuds again and nothing. I also tried putting into a speaker where you make the connection thru the bottom and still no sound. We updated it with the laptop and even put some new songs on it, yet when we try the earplugs, no sound. We don't know what to check anymore. How could there be sound in the car but no where else? Any suggestions?

Was your car 30-pin to USB? Maybe the audio was digital and then your home speaker dock is analog line level.
It's the earplug that seems to be the problem, I think. I kind of know where you're going with analog and digital but not sure. The wire I used in the car, 30pin to USB is the same wire used in the house. Besides when the device is charged there's no USB involved. It's just a weird situation.
If it's the headphone jack/hold switch cable then that's an easy fix and cheap, cost less than 10 dollars.
