Sound problem on the Windows side only on a MBP

I got the 1.83 MBP with XP Pro pre-installed. For about the first 3 days, the sound worked fine and I could hear that annoying Windows theme song, use Yahoo Messenger with Voice, play voice messages, etc.

Then, I started getting an error message about ATI graphics not being installed properly. Re-installed the driver for ATI Radeon x1600. Problem gone. But related or not, I have no audio device found on the Windows side only. On the Mac side sound is no problem. On W side, it says "no speakers or audio device installed" or something to that effect. I went to device manager to the audio section and all the codecs are there and drivers, but no device? So I am stuck.

I thought maybe the speakers were blown, but they work on the Mac side. I can't seem to figure out how to solve this issue? Any ideas from the experts?

people, people..please! I am beggin' ya...HELP! Is this a Mac driver issue? or is it the Intel High Definition Audio driver issue? I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. All the audio works on the mac side, but NO audio device is found on the Windows side anymore. I did use it for 3 days though when I first got it. So where did my Win audio go? HELP!

Go into device manager and try uninstalling the drivers for the Mac audio card. Then reinstall them. This has worked for me when Windows didn't recognize my ethernet card.

thanks but no audio card shows up. There are codecs and drivers, but when i try to reinstall those, it asks for a disk. The only disk my MBP came with is the XP Pro and OS X Install disks. Neither of these seems to have the drivers or card drivers to reinstall. So how did they get there in the first place? Or where can I find them? I looked at drivers, but I can't figure out what the card brand/model is except for the name "Intel High Definition Audio." Does that make any sense to you? Thanks again. J

Also exactly where would I find the driver for the Mac Audio Card? I looked in audio/speakers/game controllers folder.

You can find the get the driver from Boot Camp. http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

Thanks! I'll give it a try. One more dumb question...do I install it on the Mac side or Windows side? I assume Mac since it is bootcamp. But my problem is when I boot in Win.

Follow the instruction from Boot Camp and burn a CD-R containing the drivers. Then boot into Win XP and update the driver from there.

Thanks! It worked. It was less the intuitive thought. Maybe if I had installed Boot Camp myself it would have made more sense. There were some drivers that didn't install properly and I had to do it twice for it to work. The drivers that failed to install were the "PCI Device" and a "USB Device" down the list of devices in a folder called "Unknown Devices."

Ultimately the driver/Codec that worked was the "SigmaTel High Definition Audio Codec."

Any suggestions on the ones that didn't install? One was for Apple Bluetooth (I prob won't use that anyway) and the other was "USB Device", whatever the heck that is?



For those who faced this problem here is what I did, based on the sound advice given here.

On the Mac side, open >applications>utilities>Boot Camp Assistant.

Burn the Macintosh Drivers CD.

Shut Down

Boot up in Windows and insert that driver disk and install per instructions.

Seems simple now! lol
