I have a 20" 1.8GHz iMac here at my job... I've been doing some audio work with Garageband and the freeware program Audacity. At one point yesterday, Audacity locked up and ever since then I can't hear sounds played from a Finder window, or in Safari. Strangely, alert sounds work fine, and so does playing music from iTunes, and stuff in Garageband.

I've tried adjusting settings in the sound control panel, rebooting, shutting down completely, and even resetting the PRAM and nothing has fixed it.

Is there anything else I can try? (short of reinstalling the OS)

Thanks for any advice. :)

Heh... nevermind.

It just started working again for no apparent reason a couple of minutes after I posted that first message.

In your head.
I know the problem is solved, but you might want to look at the cause.

Are you doing any audio routing? (Ie. Soundflower/sfbed, Jacktools, or Audiohyjack). Just a thought.
