i bought the apple dvi to video adapter yesterday for $15 and I also went to Best Buy and bought the S-video cable along with audio cables. i thought I hooked everything up okay because the video projection is working just fine. on my tv i can see what my laptop projects, but I am doing something wrong with the sound. when i hook the sound cord into the t.v. i just get what sounds like when your tv is on a blank station with the volume at full blast. do i just need the s-video cable and a sound cord and that's all or do i need other hookups? i know this might sound stupid, but i figure I would ask the experts instead of messing around with it forever. by the way, i have a Samsung LCD-HD tv model LN-R269. thanks...

Where are you plugging the sound cable into? You description is vague, but it sounds a bit like you are plugging it into something that ends up at your DVI port. DVI cannot and does not carry audio.
i am plugging it into the audio port that is red. i know i am an idiot, but i am just not very educated on this stuff. on the apple dvi adapter, do i just need a regular audio cable that goes from the yellow hole(slot) to the audio on my tv or do i need to run a cord from the headphone slot to my headphone slot on my tv? sorry if i am not explaining it very well...
The so called audio port is because you are using a generic adaptor. There is no audio on that line. DVI cannot provide audio no matter how many adaptors you plug in.
You must run a 3.5mm jack to the headphone socket on the laptop. I imagine you will need to convert this to phone (red/white) to plug into the TV. The chances are that the headphones port on the TV is OUTPUT only, not INPUT.
so if i had a regular tv, not an hdtv, this would be really easy? i don't know that I understand what you mean by a 3.5MM jack and convert it "phone"? and i am pretty sure my headphone slot is output. what is that yellow slot on the dvi adapter used for anyway and will i be using it at all?
connect the DVI adapter to your MBP. Then you need a male-to-male composite video connector, like this:
One end plugs into the yellow jack on the DVI adapter, the other end plugs into the yellow jack on your TV. That takes care of video.
For audio, if you want the sound to come out of your TV's speakers, you need a minijack-to-RCA audio cable, like this:
You plug the minijack end into your MBP's headphone jack, and the red and white plugs into the red and white jacks of your TV.
If you do that, you're good to go. The composite video cable and minijack audio cable can be bought at RadioShack, any generic brand will do.

if you want to use S-Video, get male-male S-Video cable instead of the composite video cable.

no, you need the DVI adapter. The adapter then has 2 inputs - one for composite video (the yellow hole) and one for S-Video. If you want to use S-Video, you need a S-Video cable to attach to the adapter. There's no way to plug a S-Video cable directly into the computer.

i guess i have everything right except for the audio problem. the s-video cable projects what i see on my computer to my tv. i am not even using the video slot(yellow slot), does that matter? to watch videos in HD since my tv is HD capable, is there anything different I have to do?
no, the adapter has two output port but they do the same thing, they both do video so you can use the composite (yellow) output or the s-video output, you will use only one at each time, whichever you decide to use does not matter.
