Sound problems

Ugh. This has been an ongoing and persistent problem with my 2012 Mac Mini. The system sounds frequently just disappear. I cannot reactivate system sound in the Sound panel, nor the pulldown from the menu bar, or the sound keys on the keyboard. But iTunes, Plex and VLC all play sounds just fine. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Up to date with 10.10.1.

Not sure if it's related, but there are bugs in iTunes 12, that are affecting the sound on my Mac Mini 2012 i7 with Mavericks.

I chatted with Apple support, and they could replicate it on their end, confirming the bug is in iTunes 12.

My problem was related to aac internet radio, but it somehow corrupted the sound drivers on my machine, causing intermittent problems. It seems to have settled down for now, but researching the problem, it has to do with iTunes 12 and not Yosemite.
