iPod Sound through headphones is louder on one side than the other

Need to know if there is somewhere on the ipod 5th Generation (80g) where I can reset the setting to default to see if that will equalize the volume in the earphones. We have tested several earphones, the problem is definitely coming from the ipod which we just bought from a private seller.

Or, do you know where on the ipod I might look to see if there is an option for adjusting sound. I am wondering if when it was in the dock with speakers if the speakers were adjusted and the programming either came from the ipod or affected the programming in the ipod.

If anyone out there is familiar with a problem like this please let me know. The ipod was in very nearly new condition when we bought it a week ago. The seller swears that it had worked before properly with the headphones.

Don't know of any settings on the ipod that can change whether R or L gets more volume. If the iPod is 'nearly new' like you described it may have some warranty left on it. Just head over to https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do and type your serial number in.

Is it an iPod video or an iPod Classic? (does it have a plastic or an aluminium front?)

If it really is the 5th gen then it's the video iPod (with the plastic front) and definitely won't have any warranty left.

I have a 5th gen iPod and don't know of any setting which makes one earphone louder than the other. You can always try Settings > EQ and check that it's off but I really don't think it'll make much difference.

A common fault which the 5th gen iPods develop though is that the headphone jack stops working. Usually the sound just completely dies in one earphone, but it might cause your problem too. If so and the seller won't take it back it is fixable. It's a fiddly repair but it's cheap and I have pretty much no experience with electronics and I was able to repair mine.
