Sound unsynced on everything.

On all my applications the sound is unsynced with any video that is playing. I could be playing a dvd in dvd player or watching a trailer in quicktime or vlc or a video on youtube, and the sound is always unsynced to the video by about half a second.

This problem has being around for a while, i presumed it was because i was listening through my stereo and that was the problem but i was listening through the iBook speakers and the problem was still there.

Any ideas?

Have you restarted since this first occurred? Do you have any sound-based plug-ins installed? Maybe try creating a new user account in System Preferences to see if the problem carries over.

This has been a problem over the course of about a year, and i shut it down every night.

Sounds like it's time to do an Archive and Install (reinstall the OS). Or you can play around with trashing preferences files.

i created a new profile and it seems to work fine on there, so i guess its an issue with my profile.

Whats they easiest way of moving my files and prefs to a new profile?

Back up your important files

and do an archive and install with the original discs.

That keeps all your prefs in place and reinstalls the OS

Then when you've confirmed that all is well, delete the "previous OS folder" that will be created

that otta clean er' up

Would this remove everthing off my hard drive or not?

I would prefer to just create a new profile and just move my data over to that. is there a way i can keep the prefs?

Nope...actually NOTHING gets deleted until you delete the "Previous OS" folder. And even then you won't lose anything because your downloads, programs, documents, etc aren't in there.

It's an amazing "restore"!! I've used it multiple times.

Actually, an archive and install won't fix this. The problem is in his user library, which would be saved by Archive and install.

If you're ok with the new User you created... then login into the old one, take the preferences folder from your Library (the library that's in the home folder), and drag it to the macintosh HD. Then log out and relog in with the new one.

open that old preferences folder and hit select all (cmd a). Drag that into the preferences folder in the new user... and DO NOT OVERWRITE the files... let it copy the missing preferences over. Don't let it copy anything it want's to overwrite.

And there you go, you should be all set.

IF you'd rather keep your old one... then when you log out... log back in as your old user.. it will recreate your preferences folde rwith the necesary files. play a video to make sure. then do the same thing, select all and drag the old preferences into the new preferences folder without overwriting the newly written prefs.

I agree with chipchen although I'd avoid keeping the old preference files since it seems quite likely that's where the problem is anyway.

Let me clarify a little.

When you create a new user or move the preferences folder and re-login... there is a new set of preferences created. Those are your necessary starting preferences... hopefully including the one that makes sound and video sync together. When you copy back your preferences from the old folder, AND YOU DO NOT OVERWRITE FILES THAT ARE ALREADY THERE, then the old file that was causing the problem should not copy in. AND, you will still have your other preferences that you may need (Address Book, Mail, Safari, etc). Is that clearer?

Ahh, I see what you mean now. However, if this is done immediately then barely any preference files will have been created and therefore almost all of the old ones will be put back. Or am I missing something?...

Yes, exactly... that way you don't toss all the preferences you've used and might need (like mail).

The ones that it recreates are the necessary system prefs. That SHOULD include the one that keeps audio and video synced. If not, then right after the new preferences are created... play a video... then that file will have been created. Then so long as you don't overwrite it, you'll be good to go.
