Good afternoon to all you great people.
I'm looking for a solution to play music?
I'm at the moment using the speakers in-built in the monitor which at best are very poor.
I don't know what the sound output is like from the rear of the Mac and just use powered speakers?
or would purchasing an external USB sound card be better?
Any advice would be most appreciated

I use the Mac Pro 5.1 (mid-2012) output with a powered stereo speakerset and subwoofer.

For equalizing I use the Boom sound application.

For best sound I have a Sennheizer over the ear headphone HD-650.

The output on the rear of the Mac 5,1 is only limited by your budget for powered speakers. Don't waste your money on a sound card when the quality of the line-out is superb.
I'm running a pair of Bang and Olufsun Beolab 4s which I bought new. At that time went for $1400. They are self powered. Sound amazing for their size, were designed to be used with a computer. Can drive a room 15x12 ft to extremes loudness without distortion. You can pick up used pairs now for about $500-$700.

I disagree on that point.
The MP 4,1/5,1 analog line-out is good for general purpose and sounds quite good.
However, for more demanding purposes an audio interface / DAC makes a lot of sense and is a big step up.
To invest in good quality up to high-end loudspeakers without a decent DAC is a waste of money (and B&O definitely is IMO).
After all, a chain is as good as the weakest link.
