When I very gently tap my iPhone, it sounds like there is something loose in it. The sound seems to come from the upper part of the phone near the earpiece. I am wondering if anyone else has this issue or any suggestions about what it might be. Thanks...

I have been having this issues too with my white 32gb 3gs Sounds like it could be the sleep/wake button or the sim card slot.

Wirelessly posted (iPod touch 32GB: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

It's probably the focussing mechanism for the camera...

if so, is this noise something that occurs with all iPhone 3GS's?

I'm having the same problem. 32 gig black.

This is how I heard mine...I put mine on a paper pad on a table. I raised the top half of the phone a half inch off the table (with the bottom half still on the table), and droped it on a paper pad.

not sure where exactly it is coming from, but it is kind of unnerving.

I've been having the same problem! However, I don't think it is actually a problem, more a change in design.

The rattling is caused by the mute button, when in the silent position. It should be less noticeable when in the 'normal' position. The button has apparently been made more flexible on the new 3G S models to reduce the risk of it breaking/straining under repeated use. I believe damaged buttons were quite common on the 3G?

Having seen this explanation on several sites, including the support section on apple.com I'm no longer concerned about my iPhones' little rattle :)

I've got this problem too! Top area only and less noticeable in the 'Ring' position. If I hold that switch and shake it the rattling isnt there so I is definitely the source.

These things generally drive me nuts but having heard(and read) about switches that were too stiff in previous Iphones, it does make sense that a flexible switch would result in some rattling. Annoying but like having a 'special' child, it's still your baby - with all its little quirks and kinks. It's not time to flip the life support switch to 'off'.

Yet.

Can we pleeeease sticky this? It's almost as ridiculous as the "omg! One of my iPhone's speakers isn't working!"

It's the auto focus component in your camera. Forever.

yes. same here. when i put it down on a table it sounds like something is loose - like a switch or button is loose up top near the ear hole.. very annoying. 3gs 16gb. had it only a week so far..
