Deleted extremely large file from MacOS. Emptied trash. Disk Utility does not show any difference in free space in the physical disk, or the filesystem, container.
I heard it could be that MacOS uses snapshots, and the snapshot saved the file. How long do I have to wait, specifically?
Why does it not free up any space?

That was one problem, probably the lesser one. As far as the deleted file, since you emptied the Trash, it's gone for good. (Usually there's a message when you empty the Trash that says this is irreversible, and asks you to click OK if you're sure you want to proceed.) Your most recent backup is the best place to find the accidentally deleted file.
