I have never purchased iCloud storage, so was surprised when the ‘This Mac’ app informed me I was utilising 15GB’s of space, can someone please explain how this happens. Thank you.

Not sure what you mean by the "This Mac" app. Do you mean "About This Mac" under the Apple menu at the top left of the desktop? But that doesn't show iCloud storage. To see your iCloud storage, go to System Preferences > Apple ID. Everyone gets 5GB of iCloud storage free. Are you saying you're seeing "iCloud Storage: 15 GB" where mine (see screenshot below) says "iCloud Storage: 5GB"?

15 GB? Aside from the free 5GB, there is currently either a 50GB, 200GB or 2TB. I don't think Apple ever used 15GB as a metric for cloud space even during the .Mac or MobileMe era.
