Spaces- Desktops

I have looked all over the site, looked through the tutorials, and haven't quite found the solution to my question. I started actually using spaces, but the idea for me is that I can throw icons on them and end up sequestering them into their separate needs. One might hold my internet applications, another might hold my school files, and so forth.

This doesn't seem to be working.

My knowledge of desktops comes from what I was able to do with Linux prior to getting OS X.

If anyone can help me out, I'd be thankful.

A Mac Space is for applications; it shows a set of windows for open applications. An application can be assigned to a particular desktop, or to all of them. So you could have a "browser" desktop that say FireFox could be assigned to, and all FF's windows would open there.

But a Space is NOT a separate desktop for the Desktop folder; there's just one of those. It sits behind the Space, so to speak. It's a bit confusing because you CAN have different desktop background pictures.... And even more confusingly, once you open a Finder folder in a particular space that WINDOW is only open on that Space, although the icon for the folder itself is on the (possibly changing) background in the same place in all Spaces. Sheesh.

It would be nice if you could have a separate desktop FOLDER for each space, so that a different bunch of icons would be displayed on the background of each Space. If there's a utility that does that I don't know it.
