Is it possible, when spanning your desktop across two screens, to set the external screen as the "main" screen. Specifically to have the dock and menu bar on?

Absolutely. In the Displays pane (on the Arrangement tab) of System Preferences, just drag the menu bar onto the external monitor.

cheers. Also, when I close my macbook lid it goes to sleep, does this behavior still happen when you have an external screen attached? I want to use an external keyboard, mouse and screen on my macbook so want to close the lid.

Yes, the MB will go to sleep unless you tell it not to. I'm on my work PC right now so I can't tell you the workaround, but I'll post it when I get home (if someone else hasn't beaten me to it).

I dont know how to keep the MB awake when you close the screen, but I know if the screen in down and you awake the MB by sending any awake message (like hitting a button on the mouse or keyboard), the screen stays off.
