So just a public service announcement to anyone that it planning to share their AirPods Max with a spouse or family member: spatial audio only works for devices that are logged into the iCloud account of the primary user.
If you pair the AirPods to another persons iPhone or iPad (using the “this is not your AirPod max” pairing) - it won’t work. Spatial audio shows up during set up and during the testing phase it actually does work, but it doesn’t work in apps.
It might be a bug, but the feature doesn’t enable. Spatial audio doesn’t show up in control center either.
I tested for another issue by pairing my own AirPods Pro and spatial audio instantly worked again. Went back to my spouse’s AirPods Max - nothing. Spatial audio does work on the Max as soon as he pairs it to his own iPhone however (using the same app/content).
I really hope it’s a bug that will be fixed because it’s a bummer.
