Got a refurb unit.

When the unit starts up and there is that "Welcome to Mac" chime, the left speaker growls/buzzes/has distortion .....even at 1/3 the volume.

When watching a movie, I can hear some distortion too (usually during louder, intense scenes).

Is this normal? I think that it isn't...

so what is the problem and how can I fix it?

I've had notebooks before and this is the only one that his this problem to this degree.

Buying a refurb essentially means you are buying someone elses malfunctioning machine. Doesn't sound like software at all. Take it in to get it repaired if there is a store near you. If all you have is a CompUSA don't let them trick you into charging you anything for hardware problems that are covered under warranty.

Oh, and while I normally recommend the AppleCare warranty for notebooks I would HIGHLY recommend it for a refurbed one if you don't already have it.

I've seen a refurbed iMac [G5] that had screws missing internally; and while I'm sure it is an extremely rare circumstance it didn't really surprise me on the refurb.

Probably something lame like a blown speaker :p
