Speaker/Headphone Issue on 3G.

This morning everything was working fine after leaving the AT&T store. Now the ringer is stuck in headphones mode, even without ever using the headphones. This prevents me hearing ringtones and talking with people unless I decide to use speaker phone or wear the earphones around.

I have tried numerous things, thinking there may be dirt in the headphone jack. I used a Q-tip, even compressed air. I also followed all of these steps (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1630?viewlocale=en_US) to no avail.

Here's the kicker... I can go into settings and click on a ringtone and it will play! I go back to the home menu and use the ringer volume buttons on the side, and it says "Ringer". Looks promising, but when it locks, or I try to make a phone call it goes back to headphones. I really want to avoid the apple store, but I can't think of anything else to do? Any advice?

Weird.... I have the same problem but its on an EDGE iPhone. Started when I installed the 2.0 firmware but I originally wrote it off as an actual hardware problem (I have an appt I'd rather not go to tomorrow night at the "Genius Bar."

Downloading the "official" 2.0 now to see if my problem is related to the "unofficial" 2.0...

I had this same problem originally with my 1st phone last year.

In the end, I figure it is an issue with the headphone jack not properly realizing that you have unplugged your headphones. Try inserting and removing your headphones a few times to see if it will reset. A little jostling might cause the contacts to come unstuck and restore normal phone use.

too bad to see that this is still occurring with the new phones as well

I had already tried the multiple headphone in/outs since I had the same assumption. No luck...until...

Still wanting to avoid a genius bar visit I pulled out a paperclip, a flashlight, and a bottle of compressed air. Used the paperclip to scrape at the copper contacts, blew compressed air, and now I have a normally functioning iPhone.

If I had a new 3G iPhone though I'd still go to the bar and get a replacement. No sense risking it when you just bought the thing.

PROBLEM with ('new') Headphone Jack

Just upgraded to the iPhone 3G. The headphone jack has changed, purportedly to be more compatible (standard).

Unfortunately, I purchased a great headphone for the iPhone from Bang & Olufsen which was specifically designed for the iPhone. And NOW it won't work with the 3G's input.

Is there an adapter available to address this issue? HELP!!

i've also tried the repetitive inserting/unplugging of the headphones, i again tired the Q-Tip trick and compressed air, still nothing. I may try a paperclip just to save a trip to the apple store. I think there's possibly a short. With the headphones in I can hear a clicking sound every once in a while, when the phone isn't being used.
