Speaker phone ?

I was listening to the ipod feature the other day and the volume was pretty decent maybe just a tad bit muddy but it's through a phone speaker(to be expected), any way I put the speaker closer to my ear and i noticed sound was only coming out of one side. The left side with the screen facing up. Is there a right and left or just one sided? Anyone else experiencing this?

There are speakers in the bottom of the iPhone and that's where the music is coming from.

The left is the speaker, right is the mic. So only one on the bottom end of the phone.
