Maybe i missed it, but are there speakers or even a speaker in the macbook air?

How can a Mac be complete with out at least one mono speaker for the startup chime? :D

I love the Air and I will be getting one but the 1 speaker thing is confusing. I mean how big can the speakers be to not have it stereo?

:p

It has a headphones socket which I assume is stereo. If not you could try using bluetooth headphones?

From one of the early previews it states the "1/8" Audio Output" is mono as well. That could just be a guess. I do hope so.

That HAS to be wrong. This thing is geared toward watching movies on planes, as well as music, so it is doubtable it is mono.

As to the speaker...perhaps the mono speaker gave better sound quality than stereo within the space requirements of the machine. (one large mono speakers vs. two tiny stereo speakers)

Just means it can pick up sounds from multiple places. You don't have to be talking directly into it.

what does omnidirectional microphone mean?

It means a microphone that picks up sounds equally from all directions (except the back, of course).
Think of the pick-up pattern of an omnidirectional mic as a round sphere.

I love the little baby mono speaker for the Air. I always get a sense of nostalgia from my kindergarden days of playing with the first generation imacs when I hear the little startup chime. :-D (And it sounds very classy and original being on a lil mono speaker.)
