Hi
I am looking for a pair of speakers for my mac Mini could anyone recommend some. I sorely miss my cube with it's Harmon Kardon ones.

thank you

Well, for simplicity and reasonable quality on a budget, and if you're prepared to hunt down some used ones, then have a look at the Logitech Z-5, or the LaCie USB or FireWire speakers.

The Z-5s come with a remote and are powered by USB (and get their audio from the same bus), so no power supply and minimum trailing wires. If you've got a USB hub in your monitor then you can just run them from there.

Same goes for the Lacie ones, and they do a FW version too, which means a higher voltage from the bus, hence a higher wattage. No remote with those, and a very short cable. I've got a pair of the FireWire ones running off my 23in ACD and they just about reach to the end of the monitor plus 3-4in or so.

Obviously, if you want loads of bass or more volume in general, then you'll need to go for something that's not bus powered and probably a sub too.

It kind of comes down to whether or not you're a bit of an audiophile or not. I'm not, so I picked up some $20 speakers + sub on sale yesterday at FYE.

Really if its just for casual listening almost anything that has a sub will do. I wouldn't buy something without one, however, because you lose a ton of the nuances (and bass lines frankly) without one.

Hi Amianne,
I just purchased these for USD $5.25 at Goodwill.

They work amazing.
They don't have a remote. Who cares for 5 bucks...
They sound amazing too.
Keep looking and definitely go with Harmon/Kardon (JBL) or Bose.
Cheers

Im using some harmon/kardons, the soundsticks II, they are pretty amazing 2.1 full range set for lower budget audio, and they look way more expensive than they are, I got them for $69 on amazon a while back, they just use the headphone jack on the mini.
