Hi

With the release of Lion getting ever closer will it affect Mac specific games ?

of course...

older PPC games will no longer work at all.

Some current Intel OSX games will break and need patches... though most should run fine.

Many future games will come out as Lion only, as developers will kill off support for Snow Leopard and earlier... Lion has a newer version of OpenGL available which may help out game makers, but leave things incompatible for earlier versions if fully used.

Graphics driver updates will become Lion only... meaning the latest and greatest performance will eventually only be in Lion. Just like right now game performance in Snow Leopard is much better than it is in Leopard.

Hi

Thanks.

I have already lost all my favourite games. In fact, as far as I can see I'm left with Settlers 7, Trainz and Civ IV. Not sure about Neverwinter 2 - Neverwinter 1 is definitely out. I haven't checked things like Klondike yet.

its very simple you have a brandnew Apple OS , so you are supposed to buy new App's and new games too preferably from the app store ;)
it's very simple marketing strategy to get a bit extra money from you ;)

tztz using a new intel Mac and a new OS and then expecting Apps to work that are already older then 6 month ....where have you been hiding :D

if you need to use windows7 (32bit version) then all old games will run even from back of the days of windows 95

Regrettably we lose quite a few timeless classics. A few examples: Age of Empires 2, Rise of Nations, Diablo 2, Starcraft, Civilization 3, etc.

If you still want to play those classics in a way that's also hassle-free, IMO, best solution is get the Windows versions & play them in Boot Camp, or just get a gaming PC.

I imagine the next release of OS X will render even more older Mac games obsolete. That increasingly seems the Apple way, probably until eventually most games that'll be playable on Macs will have to be downloaded from Apple (or Steam). GL!

NWN1 Windows version works like nearly flawless with Wineskin... NWN2 is already native Intel, but I still play it with a Wineskin port instead because then i can use all the expansions and mods and everything that Aspyr left out.

all of those will run in a VM... most will run with Wineskin, but can be more tricky to get going.

wow... I'd never consider dual booting Windows to be "hassle-free" ... I guess to some people it would be, to me thats a MAJOR MAJOR hassle.

I just tried to install Diablo 2 today. "You can't open the application installer because powerpc applications are no longer supported". I forgot rosetta software is gone in lion.

I am sad. :( :( :( :( :( :(

D3 needs to come out already. ;)

I'm on Lion and I'm running NWN2. But it runs poorly and has a tendency to crash sometimes. Runs at pretty much everything maxed besides shadows at medium cause they don't matter, AA off, and 1280x800. Still a tiny bit of slowdown during big battles. Pity too, cause I'm on a high end 15" machine with an AMD 6750m, and a native res of 1680x1050

I'm running NWN2 with the framework from Dragon Age 2 (which wasn't a real mac game, but a wrapper with windows files inside). Runs pretty good, except AA won't work and bloom effects sometimes makes lighting effects look bugged, rest maxed and pretty good FPS.
