Hi,

I am still trying to decide which GPS app to buy for use in the UK. I have read many threads here, but I still have a few questions that I can't find the answer to.

I am drawn towards the TomTom, mainly because of the upcoming dock. I like the idea of a one-purchase solution and I am particularly keen to have my audio (music) coming from the dock connector rather than the headphone socket.

If anyone can answer the following questions I would be very grateful. I only care how the unit performs in the UK.

1) Does TomTom currently announce the distance to a turn? eg. "In 500 yards, turn left."

2) Does TomTom display the location of speed cameras?

3) Does TomTom announce speed cameras in advance? eg. "Speed camera ahead. Speed limit 50 miles per hour."

4) Does TomTom know the speed limit of roads and does it warn you if you are speeding?

5) Does TomTom announce which roundabout exit you should take? eg. Take the second exit." Is there a visual prompt to accompany this?

6) I understand that TomTom doesn't have visual lane guidance, but does it have audible prompts? eg. On a motorway, would I hear something like, "In 500 yards, keep right."

7) Can I control my iPod from within the TomTom app or do I have to start my music in the iPhone app, press the home button, then start the TomTom app?

Thanks in advance for any anwers.

Steve.

1) Yes it does
2) Haven't got a chance to test this, but it should display them. Don't know how large/good the database is
4) Here in finland it's pretty bad in speed limits and there is no audio warnings at the moment
5) Yes, there's also a little icon showing
6) It kinda has some, like you described

These things considered i would encourage you to buy Navigon. It's better featured and it also works way much better than tomtom (atleast for me). TomTom seems to have a pretty bad lag while navigating and it's lagging way behind the real position, where Navigon instead does a fine job.

Thanks for these answers - much appreciated.

Is the roundabout icon you mention accurate (reflects the shape of roundabout, position of exits, etc) or is it a generic "clock-like" affair?

Cheers,

Steve.

I'm not quite sure, haven't driven many, and they are have always been there circles :D but the icon shows the exit you should take.

And btw if you don't know, the tomtom car kit should work with other navigation apps after they have added support for the kit in their own app, so Navigon need only to code the support on their own software...hope they will do it quickly.
