So where do we go from here ? What’s next ?

I propose.

Native full screen output. When displaying the iPadOS desktop to an external monitor.
A toggle option in Settings if we want 60Hz or 120Hz Promotion Display active or not.
(I do a lot of web browsing and Netflix watching and have never noticed the 120Hz)
3rd Party desktop widgets
Support for Xbox One and PS4 Bluetooth controllers for gaming.
Ability to Limit CPU and GPU useage to extend battery life. I doubt the 8 Core A12X is taxed when browsing MacRumors.
Support for 10-bit H.265 and HDR and Dolby Vision streaming to external displays
Enhanced Mouse support for 3rd Party Keyboards with built in TrackPads.

Just found it and toggled it. Zero difference there should be a descriptive of what benefit this provides like battery savings.

I definitely notice a difference with promotion off on my iPad Pro 12.9. Much smoother with it on. No idea how much difference it would make to battery life.

I think we are here. Add a Logitech slim Folio Pro and an external mouse. I’ll take a iPad Pro over a MacBook Air any day.

I’d wager a iPad Pro is a superior Gaming device too. And even more so for creativity.

The OS already does this automatically. Your CPU and GPU are not pinned when doing basic tasks. The OS is going to be much more efficient at determining which cores need to be active and at what clock speed than making it a manual control.

They have a person in mind who wants primarily a computing device for medium production work using a keyboard and trackpad built in with flexible multitasking and multi monitor support via thunderbolt 3, faster storage, better file handling and more than one usb c port that can power external devices for $1199 instead of $1348 for the 256gb 12.9 with folio (which still doesn’t have a mouse for that price).

I love both my iPad and MacBook Pro, they both have a place at my table. That’s just me, but I’m sure others have a place at their table for either one which means neither are irrelevant.

I agree. I also think a lot of college students will stick with the MBA. A windows keyboard/trackpad centric environment is still superior to a touch based app centric environment for handling multiple documents, papers, and school reports. Also, there are some academic Majors that require specific math applications that are better supported on a MBA: R, Stata, Full Excel (with pivot tables & VBA), etc.. Finally, I think there is a little bias in some students to stick with the familiar laptop until the iPad proves itself. We all have a tendency to stay in our comfort zones. I see this with my own college aged kids and recent grads. They just have a bias toward MacBooks and away from iPads for school work.

One last thought: I think it is almost impossible to create a device that is simultaneously both a great tablet and a great laptop. This is because the trackpad and touch based interfaces are just so different that it is very difficult to optimize for both in one device. The Surface Pro is a good laptop and a compromised/mediocre tablet. The iPad is a great tablet and a compromised laptop. I don’t see Apple moving away from the iPad as a touch first device. First and foremost, they want it to be a great tablet. In fact, if you look at the iPadOS update, Apple spent a lot of time improving on gestures and text selection that are touch based. Mouse support appears to be a bit half baked and kind of an after thought. It wasn’t even discussed in the WWDC Keynote, and that kind of shows where Apple is coming from.

A real emphasis on increased features on widely used apps e.g. Microsoft Office. Plenty of other software developers are doing this, so now time for the major companies to also be doing it more. We are seeing for example, Adobe step up with Photoshop on iPad this year. Time for other developers to be doing more.

Microsoft office to insert the rich features not currently available in IOS e.g.in Word, adding table of contents in word, page outline window, edit styles, citations and bibliography manager, mail merge and more.

Apple to bring Final Cut and Logic Pro to IOS and enable handoff.

There is more for others that would like to see I am sure software available on Mac Store but not IOS.

Back on point with OP though - fullscreen external monitor support as a second display would be killer with multiple desktops such that one could drag an application over to the second screen and use keyboard/mouse on it or just have it stream video while working on the ipad's display in something else. Would be even better if this came with hardware upgrade to thunderbolt 3 support on a future generation of ipad pros.

I'd like to see system wide realizable floating window support rather than these tall skinny floating windows on the side that we have now. Have many windows open and if any get pushed to background/suspended have them turn gray so the user knows that something is no longer actively running in background.

MacBook and MacBook Pro should be in the same line, just strategically different price points.

Most of these are already coming with iPadOS 13/1.0.

• Native external screen support? YES! I agree this is a great next step but partly needs developers to see the potential. Would love to see support for external touch screens (although this will likely necessitate more RAM to run more apps). I actually love how iOS handles multiple apps, I just wish I could "extend" the functionality at my desk without buying a second iPad—or, if I need a second iPad giving us sidecar-server support for the iPad so two iPads would work seamlessly with each other.
• Promotion already scales between 24-120hz depending on the content being displayed. I don't see the advantage of controlling it manually. I would love to be able to set/remove FPS limiters for apps. Many games, for example, cap the FPS to save battery life.
• Unless I'm misunderstanding what you mean by widgets, this will now be possible in landscape mode.
• Xbox & PS4 controller are now supported
• Apple's hardware/software already optimizes CPU/GPU usage. I'm sure some improvements are possible but I'd guess they already industry leading here. That's part of the secret sauce to their battery life.
• There is already support for H.265 & HDR (I *believe* Dolby Vision) but very few USB-C to HDMI adapters support it. So the bigger issue is with dongle makers not Apple at this point.
• I'm not sure what support looks like for keyboards with built-in trackpads. It prob depends on how the trackpad is implemented. If it conforms to industry standards it should work. If it requires additional drivers it won't. iOS 13 changed how drivers work—I don't understand all the details—but it appears we may see Apple open up iOS to 3rd party device support in the very near future. I'm sure such a thing would be part of the app approval process.

Aside from better external screen support, I'd excited to a better implementation of Siri that doesn't take over the whole screen. Also, an extensible PiP mode so apps other that video can display info in a small floating window for things like maps/directions, chats, etc.—something that could persist without being as intrusive as a whole slide over app.

I want Apple to finally allow a proper iPad experience when using it at a desk with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. That’s what would cause me to finally give up a “real computer” and go 100% iPad (outside of work but my employer takes care of that). I think that’s an area that Apple will properly address in time.

Sure, you can kind of do that now and iPadOS will improve upon it but it still sucks. I shouldn’t have to rely on app developers to support external monitors and the current mirroring solution is terrible. We’ve been using laptops with external monitors, with different resolutions, for decades and its worked fine; I want that same level of support with an iPad. The iPadOS mouse support also kind of sucks. Sure, it’s better than nothing but I want real mouse support that works like it does on a real computer and not something that literally imitates my finger touching the screen. I think Project Catalyst will help here as developers will hopefully embrace it and code their apps to work with both types of interfaces. That will hopefully prove to Apple that it’s possible to have a single OS that can work well with both a touch interface and keyboard/mouse.

If you are looking for economy and want to run iPad OS, there are tons of relatively inexpensive options (iPad Air, iPad 2018) running from $250-$500. Third party keyboard cases can be bought for under $50 on Amazon. A BT mouse can be purchased for less than $20. I just don’t see the point in making an MBA that runs iPadOS.

Macbook Air will become the notebook version of iPad.
Macbook Air will run an operating system that is basically the same as iPadOS.
Macbook Air will not be touch based, it will be keyboard and trackpad based.
Macbook Air will be intended for the great mass of people who need cross platform (iOS - iPadOS) functionality without need for power.
Macbook Air will be sold for around USD 1100.

iOS, iPadOS processors will be ARM based, and 100% of apple's cross platform effort will become focused more and more on how to make the above workable for developers.

Macbook (not Air) will be the lowest price macOS notebook. Sold for around USD 999 for base prices, but rising steeply in configurations.
Macbook/Macbook Pro processors will be Intel based.
