Hey there!

My wife and I are going to buy a used iMac for her dad for he retirement. I didn't want to go older than a 2013 model, but I'm finding some great deals on 2010 models. Those run High Sierra, but I'm concerned that the next OS version won't support the 2010 iMacs, and then he'll be SOL. Can anyone speculate where the line might be drawn? I don't think there's much precedent for this, right? Like... I think the 2007 iMacs were supported for quite a long time and then dropped two OS releases ago... Thanks in advance for any insight!

2010 models. Remember they are STA II 3Gb/ps compared to the late '13 SATA III 6Gb/ps. Plus the huge advantage of USB3 and Thunderbolt.

In terms of price, the difference between a 2010 model and a 2013 model is huge.

Yes so in conclusion, as it relates to OS X support, you're saying ____?

I'd agree, give anything from a 2010 era a miss and move to USB 3 as a minimum if intending to upgrade the OS over what it comes with.

Even if macOS 10.14 officially supports 7-8 year old Macs, you're more concerned with the experience than the actual OS it runs.

Well I'd only get a model with 16GB of RAM and an SSD so a 2010 iMac w/ those two things will run far better than a 2013 iMac with 8GB of RAM and a hard drive.
