does anyone know if you can use speed download 2 (yazsoft.com) for speeding up bittorrent? also, is there any program that works like speed download but is free? i have seen them free for windoze, but are there any for mac? thanks! (by the way I'm using the demo of speed download.)

make sure you have opened ports 6881-6889...
do a google search for the specifics... it depends on whether you are connected to the wall or through a router...
but opening those ports does speed things up.
make sure you are waiting a while for the torrent to speed up. bittorrent works in a complicated way that lets you download faster as you've uploaded more... for me it takes about 5 min to get to me meager top speed (28KB/s)
if you know how to use your resources and you've got like a 3mbit/s line you are a lucky man/woman... i've heard from my cousin-in-law that when he downloads via bittorrent he can get up to about 350 KB/s - 400 KB/s
 is appropriate ;)

it really depends on the network connection of the person seeding...if the person seeding only has a slow cable connection, then even a T3 wouldn't help speed anything up.

another thing other than opening those ports, make sure that NAT is turned off on your router (if you have one).

(btw mods this is NOT warez :) )
ummm bittorrent's underlying protocol is more complex than that. The only way it will speed up is if you have someone uploading more than they are downloading or if there are lots of seeders. Seeders send to everyone who needs it, regardless of how much they upload. However, if the person is not seeding and is still downloading portions, they'll upload most to the computer sending the most amount of data. And so on.

Sometimes nobody seeds and max speed I get is around 0.1kb/s :D very frustrating uploading at more than 40KB/s. Sometimes i get 200-300KB/s with ones with lots of seeders.
The best bet is to forward all the ports (6881-6889) and upload as much as you can. Don't be lazy and limit the upload speed. It'll just slow you down.

I've had torrents creep and creep along, and then I'd, like, go into the other room for 10 minutes and come back, and the damn thing would suddenly be done! Very creepy, those torrents.
