Speed tests show nice up/down but youtube, normal surfing Transmission and everything is crawling to a stop. Youtube is auto-selecting 360p, pages barely load. Downloads are down to 80K. 1995 speeds. This is happening on two different macbooks too.

It's not malware so I'm not sure what's going on. I tried setting DNS to Google DNS and other things.

Can't even update Virus scanner definitions because it's so slow.

Both macbooks are connected to wifi via Softbank Wifi router. Huawei b610s.

There are no LAN cables. The router has LAN inputs but right now it's just using some magic signal from somewhere on the power grid? Or the router is pulling WiFi itself from outside maybe? So really, our Macbooks are using a WiFi router that itself is pulling a wireless connection from somewhere.

Is the connection from the ISP coming from the power socket or some wireless antenna outside? We just plugged it into the wall wort and we got Wifi.

I opened the settings page at 172.16.255.254 but nothing helped. There aren't even any port forwarding settings so I can't even do port forwarding for Transmission.

Some things I would try:
  1. Connect via Ethernet cable to eliminate WiFi interference
  2. Use a VPN to minimize ISP effects on traffic.
  3. Find what technology you’re using to connect, is is cellular, WiFi

Connect via ethernet, TURN OFF wifi, and try again.
If you don't have an ethernet cable that's long enough, TEMPORARILY MOVE the Mac closer so that you CAN connect it.
Does anything change?

Softbank is a cellular service company. Your Softbank/Huawei router is basically a cellular hotspot like using your iPhone for the same purpose.

Often the default configuration of these types of routers prevents device administration from wireless connections. That enforces slightly better security because it requires physical access to the device.

If you want to diddle with the device settings, you will likely need to connect a physical Ethernet cable from one of your Macs to the router for the device to let you access the admin web interface at least initially.

This has been the case for every single WiFi router I have owned for 18+ years.

This should all be in the device's owners manual which you should go back and re-read very carefully at this point.

As for your speed issues, take a Mac elsewhere and connect it to a different network and observe performance. If there is a vast difference, there is something wrong with your Softbank router or its connection to the cellular network.
