Hi there,

I designed, and am having coded, a new iPhone app called Spendly. Its an income and expense tracking tool aimed specifically at freelancers. The first version is relatively simple and will be live on the App store—hopefully—by the end of this month.

There's not much on http://spendly.com right now, but you can sign up to get an email when things start progressing. We'll also be handing out beta's and coupons based on those who sign up.

Outside of that, I thought I share some exclusive screenshots of the app with the MacRumors community. Please let me know your thoughts and suggestions!

This first image is of the app that will be launching shortly:

This second image shows some of the features we plan to add in a free update. These features include: Alerts, Trends, Location, Filters and Search.

We have plenty of other stuff that we're working on as well, but we're not quite ready to share those things yet. I hope you guys like the design of the app and that you'll sign up at http://spendly.com—We'll be using those names to pick people for beta testing.

Feel free to leave feedback/comments here, or you can email me directly at hi@spendly.com - Thanks!

-Shaun

Love the name!

Can you get the $ symbol into the name for the logo? So $pendly, or something? I just think the coin is a little bland.

As the author of the existing app Spend, I wish I had picked this name instead- much catchier!

Looks great so far. Entry looks fast, and the upcoming features look worthwhile. I'm looking for an app that tracks multiple accounts, can have some accounts not included in the home total (tracking debts), graphs that include balance, income, and expenses (my income and expenses fluctuate a lot. The ultimate feature for me though would be a way to back up my data online (I don't have a regular acced to reliable computer, so QIF and CSV exports don't do my any good. It's just so if my iPhone crashes, I can restore the data.

wow this looks really good, I would love an app like this. Are you going to have a section for monthly reoccurring bills? like for you to keep a list of the things you know you have to pay each month i.e. Mortgage, Car payment, Insurance etc.... Then just have that repeat without having to manually enter it each month.

PS. love the trend graph idea. Nice way to see if your spending is getting out of control :D

Looks pretty good. I currently use Spend but competition is always a good thing.

Ha! I've actually had the spendly.com domain for a while now. It was originally going to be a web app—and may still end up with a web component. I'm a web designer and developer by trade, but the iPhone is just an awesome device to design for that I couldn't NOT release an app.

Spendly isn't really about budgets and personal finance. Its not really about tracking bank accounts either. Its main goal is as an income/expense tracker. Basically, Spendly doesn't care about the account or budget associated with a transaction—its all about keeping business finances simple.

How much did I make? and How much did I spend? Those two questions alone can help a freelancer make wiser decisions about future spending and the health of their business.

Very cool name and logo, and good job coming up with a specific nitche that needed filling. There are a number of money calculators and things out there, gotta differentiate yourself and come up with something useful, and Spendly looks great. I may have to look into getting it to help with my day-to-day expenses and stuff soon, when I go freelance.

That actually sounds more like what I am making - it's not for day-to-day transactions like Spendly at all, but a simple app for setting up periodic budgets, seeing how a budget change or purchase or whatever will effect your overall pool of money down the road. Mine is for someone trying to save money or get out of debt, or even just someone who thinks in tems of paychecks rather than daily spending, and would like to see how much money they could have in 6 months with their current budget. Here's a couple preview shots of what it looks like right now, though the name and design are still works-in-progress:

Always smart to get the domain first! In my old job, I traveled a lot and had to fill out expense reports and copy receipts, so a decade ago, I registered a bunch of expense-related domains (MyExpenses.com, etc.) in the hopes that one day I'd write such an app (this was when I had an Apple Newton, BTW!)

Is international currency included aswell?

There are no immediate plans to incorporate international currency. We're focusing on delivering a solid app first. Then we'll prioritize updates—including localization at some point.

Looks great (your app). It's as easy as reading from the locale setting, btw. Good luck with your app. :)

grats on your release :)

Thanks! I'm really excited. This is my first iPhone app—actually that's not true. I'm a founder of http://tickspot.com and worked on that iPhone app.

I'm looking forward to making some major updates to Spendly, including multiple accounts (something I used to be against but have changed my mind on) and categories, as well as some cool graphs and other surprises.

I'd love to hear what you think about Spendly.

I bought it, and it crashes every time I make an entry. Suggestions?

First off, I'm sorry that you're having this issue. It pains me to hear it. The app was extensively tested for nearly 2 months.

My only suggestion at this point is to try shutting down your device by holding down the sleep button for a few seconds and moving the red slider to the right. Then hold the sleep button again for a few seconds until you see the Apple logo to restart the device.

If this doesn't resolve the issue, could you please email me at hi@spendly.com and let me know what device you're using along with any other pertinent information.

I really appreciate it, and again, I'm sorry you're having an issue with Spendly.

I will do a hard reset and let you know.

After a few crashes, I was able to add my beginning balance. I have not been able to go any further without it crashing. I don't mean to discourage people from buying it, it looks like a great app! I just thought I'd let you know.

I'll post after the reset.

Seems to work well after reset. I have been looking for an app like this. Since I'm always playing on my iPhone, I might actually enter my transactions. Ha ha, I sure don't now.

UI is good. Thanks!
