Got a free 9.7 a1664 with a spicy pillow that did half the work for me by releasing the screen/digutizer.

New battery on its way & this will be a nice upgrade for my oldest 5 y/o sons Air 2.

It was pretty straight forward although I did reference a few of ifixits disassembly pics to ensure I didn’t miss any screws. The pillows got so spicy they actually pushed the digitizer right off the back of iPad so opening it was a breeze. This also preserved the prior adhesive strips so resticking the halves back together was easy-breezy. New battery works great.

The most challenging part of a battery swap IMO is finding a recycler so the prior nicad doesn’t go in landfill.

The one thing that was a challenge was getting the old battery connector out and the new one in. There’s a pin that the connector has a donut for that the pin sticks into to hold the battery connector in position. That was a pain in the butt. There’s a tool one can buy for this bit but I just used a spudger and my finger nail lol. Fiddly but it worked fine. I figure you could cut the front of the donut off (it’s plastic) with pinch cutters and then the connector would slide right in (in theory lol) and be held in by the screw that goes through that once donut exuding downward force. Also the battery has strong adhesive so once it’s in place it really isn’t going anywhere lol. Anyways, got it in w/o surgery lol.
