hi guys

Just mins ago I accidentally spilled a whole cup of tea all over my table, where my Mac was also placed. The tea got on from the top left of the keyboard and drooled down over it. I noticed after the tea was over my MacBook and picked it up and switched it off. Then shock off the water that was dripping from it, cleaned it with a towel and have it face down with a towel over the keyboard. Stupidly I did try to push the power button which did not give any response on the press :(

I really don't know what to do here, it just happened now and the contact was not very severe to my layman understanding but then again I don't know squad. Also I do not have any Apple Store in my country so please any help you guys provide would be immense to me.

Thank you.

Let it dry out. Don't use for a day.

A trick I read about back in the day: place in a sealable bag or container and add a lot of rice to the bag and seal. The rice absorbs the moisture. Let sit for a day or two.

But, bottom line, will need to let it sit for a while. How fast it dries out will depend on, obviously, local climate and humidity levels. At which point will know if any real damage done.

Thank you for the advice but I'm really concerned about the fact that I prematurely tried to turn it on 20 mins later and there was no response to the pressing of the power button!! Does this mean I have lost my laptop for good or is there still chances of better outlooks after couple days of drying?

Just to add: I did another mistake of connecting it to the charger after 2 hrs in drying.. It did turn on, load my profile, the loading bar took some 2 mins to bring up the desktop... But here are the post start complications:
1. The fan is extremely loud and is throwing air out from the bottom right corner.
2. Although the laptop has a charge of 45% it is not working unless I give it the power cord.

Realising late it was stupid to try n turn it on, I closed it and put it upside down on the towel again

It might have been toast from the moment you spilled the tea.
You might (but unlikely), have damaged it from pressing the power button.
You might have damaged it from connecting the charger.
It might still turn out OK.

Stop trying to turn it on. Put it somewhere warm so the moisture can evaporate off. And stop messing with it power-wise. If you can remove the bottom plate then that is better for air circulation. Leave it 2 days. Use rice as mentioned. Stop trying to turn it on. Cross your fingers.

Spills are unpredictable. Your machine may or may not recover, or it may seem like it's OK but then later on problems crop up. Turning it on was certainly not the best thing to do, and contrary to what folks say about the rice, be careful with it. Grains of rice can get stuck in your USB ports, headphone port etc. Let it dry out for around a week and keep your fingers crossed. Also keep in mind that you blew any warranty that was left on the machine.

I would open it and wash it out with a suitable solvent. The keyboard may be done for, the never seem to come back from spills.

I don't think yosemite is a factor in the not booting though.

I spilled half a quart or so of water on the keyboard of my rMBP a few weeks ago. I immediately turned it upside down and gently tried to shake off what had absorbed. After cleaning up the mess with paper towels, I let the thing dry out for an hour or so. Holding my breath, I tried turning it on and it came alive much to my relief. However, the screen had a strange white fuzzy border and in the middle was a big white fuzzy square. One of the Shift keys was permanently pressed so that everything I typed came out in caps. I had to use the app Karabiner to figure out which Shift key it was and then auto-disable it on startup. That returned my keyboard (and mouse clicks) to normal.

The screen display was still awful, but it did appear to be getting better and less fuzzy white with each hour I used it. I disabled the Sleep function in Energy Saver and let it run the screensaver for the next 24 hours. When I woke up and looked it was almost perfect. No white border or fuzziness hardly anywhere. After days of it being left on it is back to its excellent normal retina look. The only problem is I can't close the lid or let the display sleep. If I do, even for half an hour, the white fuzziness reappears; not as bad as the first time but it's definitely there. It will always return to normal within a couple hours of being back on, but at least the whole thing isn't a total ruin.

I feel so fortunate.
