Just updated a 2019 iMac to a 14.3.1 fresh install from a downloaded installer on a newly formatted 1 TB external SSD. I see a spinning cursor with just about everything I do. Even with only BBEdit running, going back and forth between 2 windows, the cursor spins for 4 or 5 seconds each time. Same for moving between 2 running apps. Any suggestions how to improve things?

You need to start troubleshooting by swapping in/out different USB cables, using different ports, etc. Download a drive speed test like Black Magic and run tests.

I have several of these drives and all have the same performance results using BlackMagicDesign. I rebooted with Ventura and performance is back to normal.

"Fresh" install. Was that erase SSD, install macOS and nothing else? Or did you use Migration Assistant (or Finder, or something else) to recover your settings and apps from a previous install or backup?

If the former, I would suspect SSD or its cable.

If the latter, could also be something in your configuration and installed software. Try again with a fully erased clean install.

Erase SSD
Fresh install
Use Migration Assistant to recover apps, etc. from a working Ventura startup. User files/accounts are on a separate SSD. Remove most of the non-app startup stuff

I will try a fresh install with nothing else.

The problem was caused by the version of Grammarian PRO3 X that I had installed. Maybe there is a newer version and I will find out, but for now I seem to be up and running on MacOS 14.3.1. Thanks everyone.
