Hi all, my mbp18 aometimes show the rainbow spinning wheel after I upgrade from Mojave to Catalina.

Before this upgrade it worked without any problem.

I think it happens only when using chrome but I’m not 100% sure of this.

Cleaning Chrome cache didn’t work.

Should I provide a PRAM reset? Other suggestions?

Many thanks

Hi there.
does it look like a spinning beachball?

It is not actually a problem but rather a symptom. The spinning wheel is an indication that an application is dealing more processes than it can handle or sometimes it can be because of faulty hardware or insufficient RAM.

let's just say, for example, your Chrome after upgrading to Catalina, needs more time to process something. Not sure why it happens on your mac but I suggest is try to free up disk space.

If you don't have enough free space (at least 10% of the disk's total capacity), your Mac will struggle noticeably and you'll see the spinning beachball more often.

Hi thanks for you answer.

Yesit looks like a spinning beachball. the machine is not supposed to work so hard launching many Chrome sessions: I have 16gb of ram and nearly 200gb of free space.

that’s a clue..

It's happening to me too! Whenever I launch Chrome browser on my 10.15.2 mac, after typing the first url a spinning ball always appears for a few minutes and then things are OK after it disappears. I think it's a serious 10.15.2 bug. Hopefully apple will fix it.

In my experience, updating from one mac OS to the next is quite often a good idea. It can lead to errors and performance decrease. Doing a fresh install and migrating everything one needs manually is a bit of work but yields the best results.

Hmmm. In the meantime, let's isolate the potential RAM or free space issue.
How about reinstalling your Chrome?

another thing, if your Chrome has a lot of extensions installed? try to remove some of them and monitor if there is an improvement.

thank you for the answer.

I uninstalled and installed chrome again and nothing changes.

I have a dozen extension installed but I need for work, so unfortunately I can uninstall just a couple but no more.

I have also thought about a fresh install but there’s to much time to waste to setup the machine. Is there a way to perform a fresh install and automatically re-create the user, the preferences and so on?

I accept to install the different apps, but I don’t want to stayan hour or so to setup user / my work place network and so on...

You should try creating another user account and log in. You may need to wait a while for the Spotlight indexing to finish on the new account. Then fire up Chrome and note performance.

Extensions are user-specific, the new user shouldn't have any of the extensions.

If Chrome works under the new user, then it's like that one of the extensions is incompatible with Catalina until that developer updates it.

Since you are using this system for work purposes and those extensions are required for work, you should also consult your company's IT department for guidance.

that’s a good suggestion. I’ll try it. Thanks!

You may only try disabling the extensions without uninstalling them. Just to check if there are extensions that may not work well with Catalina ( just a hunch, since the issue, happens after upgrading )

You may try the steps here to transfer your user preferences if you proceed in fresh installing your mac os

Thank anybody for the suggestion.

I'm new in the MacOs environment so I don't want to make mistake.

I would try the fresh install but I'm not sure if I can import those information after the fresh install:

1) MacOs settings (i.e. dark mode settings etc)
2) login option (server connection config)
3) my user with his settings
4) VPN settings
