I have found that mine is not working either. Just updated to El Capitan last night. Where the 'split screen' button is suppose to be, there is only the option to make it full screen. Maybe it does not work on my Air. Will have to check compatibility.

Running on a MacBook Air (11 inch, Mid 2011)

apparently the solution is to go to mission control and tick the option for "Displays have separate Spaces"

By "tick" do you mean it SHOULD have a checkmark? Or do I need to REMOVE the checkmark?

When I checked Mission Control, it was already checked.

On my Mac, you have to click and hold the green button. If you click (and don't hold) the green button, then it goes full screen.

After a second or two, the other windows kind of gray out, and you can drag that window to whichever side you prefer.

This worked!! Thank you. I didn't think to click and hold. Appreciate the help from you both.

yeah it should be checked
Split screen works find. I think you are just unsure of how to make it work. Watch the video on El Capitan features on this website. The split screen is the GREEN button, up in the left corner of every application (Red, Yellow, Green). Click and hold, 1/2 the screen turns gray, drag and release.

can apple music use the split screen feature? I'm having trouble using apple music and safari in split view. I can do safari with other things like notes and such.

In a little world of my own
Other option (and the one I use) and to be go to Mission Control and drag one app over another full screen app and it splits them in full screen. I for example have Evernote and OneNote setup like that as am moving from Evernote to OneNote over time.

That doesn't work for me. In Mission Control view, dragging an app on top of another doesn't do anything. I was assuming that split screen would work like Slide Over in iOS 9 - pull in a vertical list of apps, select one and that becomes the other half of the screen. So apps have to be open in a window for split screen to work?

Apps for me have already been in fullscreen mode, so drag one fullscreen app over another. Try that

OK, finally got it. Yes, apps have to be in full screen mode (why?), and dragging the thumbnails of the apps on top of each other at the top of the screen in Mission Control view, not the individual windows. I was dragging the windows. Doh! it's been a long day...

But Displays have separate Spaces is already checked in my preferences too, and I don't even see any green zoom button anywhere in any app. So how do I get split screen activated?

Okay,

I got it working now... I didn't realize that the green zoom button was the little round green button in all windows. They made it look entirely different in the demos and I was looking for that. And then I followed another poster's instructions to make sure the displays have separate spaces option in mission control preferences in system preferences is checked and then log out and log back in again.

Though what I'm finding now is that not all apps are compatible with split view. It works with Safari, but Notes with Safari came up not in full screen, and therefore not taking up the full half screen, and then it suddenly quit. I see that Apple has some work to do on the split view feature. But I do have it working now and satisfied with that for now.

Having (I think) mastered Split Screen, it does seem somewhat clunky compared to the implementation in iOS9. Why do apps have to be full screen to work? Why can't I open a new app into one of the Windows?
