I can't get the search function in mail to work at all. I search for something like my name, or the subject of a letter I just looked at and no matter what it comes up with no results. What's up?

Spotlight in Mail not Working

Is this both using the search box in the Mail app and the Spotlight icon in the top right corner of your Menu Bar? Remember that by default, the search box in Mail will only search the folder you're looking at. So, if I have my Inbox open, it'll only search my Inbox unless I tell it otherwise.
