I never had any problems with Spotlight, but since yesterday I can't use it - it just quits 2-3 seconds after I open it. There is no error message. Spotlight icon in the menu bar for a moment is gone... Sometimes for a moment I can see search results. Reindexing, restarting didn't help. Yesterday I updated Parallels desktop, it's probably unrelated but who knows...

Any advice helps... Thanks.

Macbook Air 2015, Big Sur 11.0.1

edit: every time Spotlight quits I'm getting mds_stores and (not every time) Spotlight crash report in console.

I also had a lot of problems with Spotlight. Deleting the index and reindexing solved it somehow. Now it is not disappearing (crashing?) any longer. But still it is different from before and I don't think it is an improvement.

Also having issues with spotlight (I get results for a couple of minutes after rebooting then nothing).

Haven't found a fix yet, but it seems borked.

Edit, I do have this in my logs, which suggests that the background scheduler is not letting the spotlight process run, which is dumb:

501:com.apple.messages.spotlightIndexing:E5D8F2:[
{name: DeviceActivityPolicy, policyWeight: 20.000, response: {Decision: Must Not Proceed, Score: 0.00, Rationale: [{deviceActivity == 1}]}}
], FinalDecision: Must Not Proceed}

After some trial and error this morning, I re-enabled SIP and it seems to be working (But i've had that illusion before).

Do you have sip enabled?

SIP was a red herring, the cause was booting via ReFIND. No idea how or why, but not booting via refund lets spotlight work flawlessly.
