(I may have posted about this here previously, if so, apologies - but if I did, I can't find that message.)

A few times lately, Spotlight has just stopped working.

It can NOT find files I know are there.

Sometimes, just to test it, I ask it to find a file that is right in front of me - and it fails!

I have no idea why this is happening. I remember, in the past (earlier versions of the Mac OS) there would sometimes be a dot (like a dotted note) next to the spotlight magnifying glass icon, but I haven't seen that for years.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

hey did it - just now. thank you!

question: is there any way to tell that the reindexing process is still going, or finished, or what?
(I'm re-indexing a 5TB external drive...)

thanks again for the intel!

An empirical way would be to open Activity Monitor and look for mds_stores. If it's not indexing, the processor usage should be 0.0
