All my text files (PDFs, .docx, .pages, etc.) have Spotlight metadata and file extended attributes for kMDItemKeyphraseLabels, kMDItemKeyphraseConfidences, kMDItemKeyphraseVersion.
These can be displayed as part of the output from either:
Has anyone explored these metadata/xattrs or have a reference for their origin and use?
My suspicion regarding their use is that Spotlight searches (command-space) are using the key phrases as one of the inputs into ordering search results. This would tally with Spotlight results seeming to be better ordered than a few years ago.
Following up a Spotlight search with "Show more", opens Finder with search results which are not sorted by any column. Seems to be some sorting "by relevance". This is not the same as opening a Finder windows and initiating a search - in this case results are sorted by columns.
Has anyone else looked at how Spotlight sorts results?
It is possible to use kMDItemKeyphraseLabels in a Finder search, but only by using an additional search criterion using a "raw" search.
I am using macOS 15.3.1 (Intel and M3).
A web search for kMDItemKeyphraseLabels gave me a few results (up to a year old) and those were relating to Linux users opening Mac tar files. No Mac user seems to have discovered these metadata in over a year.
Any more thoughts?
