Quite often when I type in something in the spotlight search nothing happens, i.e. it doesn't bring up a list of suggestions/locations for files etc, I have to try it 3 or 4 times and then eventually the window comes up with the suggestions, however sometimes it works first time. Does anyone know what's causing this and how to fix it please?

I have an M1 Max Macbook Pro running OS Monterey 12.6.3.

There are issues in Monterey with regard to Spotlight that have been resolved in Ventura, but unfortunately Apple did not care to backport the fixes to Monterey.

The work-around is to force-kill the Spotlight process (don’t remember its name, not at my Mac right now).

Thanks, I'm not sure what the force-kill thing is but I assume the obvious solution is to use Ventura but I'm reluctant as I'm not sure all of my Plug-Ins for Logic Pro work on Ventura. I guess I could try and then if they don't then reinstall Monterey via a time machine back up?

You should update to 12.6.5. I have it on two Macs (Intel & Apple Silicon), no problems with Spotlight on either.
Thanks I'll give it a go but I've had issues since day one, I can't actually remember which OS my Macbook was shipped with but I think it was Monterey 🤔. I've also had an intermittent issue with the cursor, I wonder if that might be solved by Ventura too.
