I tried the following but it didn't help:

I tried. What seems to have resolved the issue was:
- boot into safe mode
- run Disk Utility -> First Aid (AFAIK this also repairs file permissions)

I usually go to the Privacy tab: put the local disk in it..and then remove it. This would fix the DB.
