Any idea why it does that now, It used to be fine, but what makes this happen. I've seen it's not uncommon, but what happens to make the problem start, as there are a few other glitchy things and wondered if it's something that can sort all out without upgrading to High Sierra? Is it known what causes it in the first place?

"Turn OFF (uncheck) the "Bookmarks & History" option in Spotlight pane in System Preferences. The problem will stop until Apple fixes Safari."

This worked for me.

Thanks, I had that done, but it's still not doing it. I write 'D' and Disk Utility used to be top and stay there and now it disappears completely from the list after a flash of it for a second
