spreading itunes library over 2 drives

I have a relatively large itunes library - 88gb music, 100gb movies plus a few gb of podcasts and mobile apps.

I have a macbook air with a 128gb HD. Currently I have transferred all my music to the internal drive (from my old machine). however this has left me with very little space. Here is what I would like to achieve: -

- Store podcasts, tv shows, movies plus selected music which I dont listen to much on an external HD

- Retain a single itunes library database file, stored internally and kept organised

- When podcasts/applications are updated, they are automatically stored on the external drive

I have searched google for answers and only seem to get half-solutions. If anyone has solved this problem and has a seamless solution which ensures their itunes library doesn't mess up, that would be great!

Set it to the internal drive, add your primary choices. Then set it to the external drive, with consolidate turned off. Add the remaining files. Set it back to the internal drive.

How about using symbolic links on Unix level ? move to movies to the external file and replace the folder in iTunes directory with a symbolic link to the new location. That would let iTunes let see all as it would be on one disk.
I did that with my whole library stored on a NAS but linked into local disk.

just to update - i have had some success with creating symlinks for the 'mobile applications' folder and 'movies' folder.

however itunes wont let you import new items (it says it cannot find the folder) if the 'add files to itunes library folder' option is ticked in preferences. Having done some research, this wasn't an issue until itunes 9 and 10.
hopefully apple will either sort out the symlink issue, or greatly improve the way itunes manages files for itunes 11
